Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd congratulates the Eskom Board Chairman, Mteto Nyati, on accepting an invitation to become an Honorary Fellow of the South African Academy of Engineering (SAAE), recognising his contribution to engineering-led institutional renewal and national development.

The prestigious recognition follows a resolution by SAAE Fellows at their Annual General Meeting on 30 June 2026, acting on a recommendation by the Academy’s Executive Committee. The SAAE is an independent body of leading engineering professionals affiliated with the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS), dedicated to promoting South Africa’s technological welfare, infrastructure capability and long-term competitiveness.

“I accept this Honorary Fellowship not as a personal accolade, but on behalf of the Eskom Board, our executives and, above all, the thousands of employees who made the turnaround possible. They had the answers long before anyone was prepared to listen. What the Academy recognises today is not a miracle. It is disciplined engineering, accountability, and people who rose to what the country needed from them. Eskom is an engineering company. When we returned to first principles and treated the people closest to the problem as partners, the lights stayed on. I carry this honour in their name,” said Eskom Board Chairman, Mteto Nyati.

Honorary Fellowship is among the Academy’s highest forms of recognition and reflects not only professional achievement, but also a commitment to advancing engineering excellence, innovation and evidence-based solutions to national challenges.

The recognition comes at a defining moment in Eskom’s history. Under the Board’s governance and strategic oversight, supported by the focused execution of executive leadership and the expertise and commitment of Eskom employees, the utility has achieved one of the most significant turnarounds in South Africa’s democratic era. Eskom has restored operational performance, strengthened its financial position and implemented significant structural improvements that have enhanced governance, organisational effectiveness and execution discipline. These achievements have repositioned Eskom from a period of crisis and recovery to one focused on strengthening resilience, advancing the unbundling of the business and creating enduring value for South Africa.

Eskom congratulates its Chairman on this distinguished recognition. The Fellowship affirms the contribution that engineering excellence, ethical leadership, disciplined governance and employee expertise can make in rebuilding critical national infrastructure.
