Tuesday, 24 February 2026: Eskom has released the draft Cost‑Benefit Analysis (CBA) report on flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) at Medupi Power Station for public comment. This follows the directive issued by the then Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Deon George, on 31 March 2025, which requires Eskom to conduct and make publicly available an updated assessment for input from interested parties.

The assessment was undertaken by an independent service provider to support an open, evidence‑based process that will assist the Ministry in reviewing the matter.

The draft report, along with a non‑technical summary, will be open for public comment from 24 February to 26 March 2026. Communities, environmental groups, industry representatives, government institutions and all other interested and affected parties are encouraged to review the documents and share their feedback.

Copies of the draft reports will be distributed to stakeholders from today, 24 February 2026 and will also be available on the Eskom website at https://www.eskom.co.za/eskom-divisions/gx/emissions-standards/

Online public meeting

Eskom plans to hold an online public information meeting to discuss the report on 10 March 2026, 14h00 to 16h00.  Interested parties can join the meeting using the link below:

After the comment period closes, Eskom will update the draft report and prepare a comment and response report capturing all the stakeholder input received. This report, together with the final version of the CBA, will be submitted to the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Mr Willie Aucamp, as part of the decision‑making process.

Eskom remains committed to transparency, environmental responsibility and ongoing engagement with stakeholders. The organisation continues to work with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to ensure that decisions are guided by sound technical information, public consultation and appropriate environmental considerations.

The draft report and summary can be accessed on the Eskom website or by contacting [email protected]. Any queries can also be routed to this email address.

Eskom’s work to reduce emissions and enhance environmental performance remains a central part of its operational approach. At the same time, the organisation must carefully balance these environmental commitments with the responsibility to provide dependable and affordable electricity.
