The JAECOO J5 forms part of the brand’s compact SUV lineup in South Africa, positioned below the larger J7. Following the introduction of the J7 and J7 SHS plug-in hybrid, the J5 broadens the JAECOO portfolio with a four-variant range comprising Core, Vortex, Glacier, and Inferno.

Exterior Design

Unmistakably JAECOO, the J5 features a bold front grille flanked by slim, high-mounted headlights. The clean, minimalist design is complemented by squared-off wheel arches that lend a subtle muscularity to its premium aesthetic.

Core models receive 17-inch wheels as standard, while the rest of the lineup gains 18-inch alloys. A full-width rear light bar is standard across the range, giving the J5 a distinctive and sophisticated presence. LED headlights are standard on Glacier and Inferno derivatives, while LED daytime running lights feature on all variants.

Performance and Efficiency

All J5 variants are powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 115 kW and 230 N.m of torque, delivering flexible performance in everyday driving.

Power is sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission, engineered for smooth acceleration and optimal efficiency. Three driving modes, Eco, Normal, and Sport, are available on the Core derivative.

Fuel consumption is rated at 7.5 L/100 km across the range. With a 51-litre fuel tank, the J5 offers a theoretical driving range of approximately 679 km between fill-ups.

A MacPherson strut front suspension and a multilink rear setup provide a fine balance between comfort and responsive handling. Ventilated front disc brakes and rear disc brakes provide confident stopping performance.

Practicality

A 2,620 mm wheelbase ensures generous cabin space for both front and rear passengers. Luggage capacity measures 480 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1,284 litres with the 60:40 split-folding rear bench folded flat. The J5 also offers a 750 kg towing capacity on selected variants, reinforcing its everyday usability.

Interior and Comfort

The J5 range offers varying levels of trim and equipment across its four derivatives.

The Core features black cloth upholstery, six-way driver and four-way passenger seat adjustment, automatic climate control, a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen, and an eight-inch digital driver’s display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with USB and USB Type-C ports.

The Vortex builds on this specification with additional convenience features, including automatic wipers and headlights and a 13.2-inch infotainment display paired with a four-speaker sound system.

The Glacier adds leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a six-speaker sound system.

At the top of the range, the Inferno includes dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, ventilated front seats, a wireless charger, and an eight-speaker JAECOO sound system, along with further premium enhancements.

Technology

Infotainment across the range includes touchscreen functionality, digital driver instrumentation, and wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Higher-grade derivatives benefit from larger infotainment displays and upgraded sound systems, with the Inferno offering the most comprehensive in-cabin technology specification.
