Imagine experiencing an underwater world of exploration, research and collection through a board game. Finspan, the latest title from Stonemaier Games, is now available in South Africa and it does exactly that. It immerses players in the rich ecosystems of the ocean where they get to discover fish across the Sunlight Zone, Twilight Zone and Midnight Zone, while building combinations that help their dive sites flourish over four rounds.

Part of Finspan’s appeal lies in how beautifully it combines theme and gameplay. It’s visually engaging, richly atmospheric and layered without being too heavy on strategy. The game is part of the world of Wingspan and Wyrmspan, so it comes with a strong pedigree.

Wingspan, the breakout hit that captured the imagination of players around the world, helped redefine what modern board games could look and feel like. With its bird theme, elegant design and satisfying engine-building gameplay, it attracts hobby gamers along with people who have never really seen themselves as board game players before.

Then came Wyrmspan, which took that familiar style of play into the realm of dragons and fantasy. Darker, moodier and more mythical, it offers a different flavour while keeping the same sense of discovery and layered play. Where Wingspan feels airy and nature-driven, Wyrmspan leans into world-building and imagination.

Philip Galliford, spokesperson for Solarpop – distributor of Finspan, says: “There is a growing appreciation for tabletop experiences that are beautifully made, easy to get into, and rewarding to revisit. Finspan brings together theme, design and shared play in a way that feels current and fresh. It offers a tabletop gaming experience that’s intelligent and aesthetically refined.”

I think she [Eleanor Roosevelt] was a shrewd politician, and very good in Public Relations, although she had the usual media help in this. As a Republican and a conservative, I can say ruefully that the Democrats and the liberals tend to get it; that when she said something, it was put in a nice way and highlighted properly by the appropriate media, so that it sounded good. – William A. Rusher
