As Father’s Day draws near and the June/July school holidays approach, there’s no better time to indulge in the enduring tradition of father-child bonding through fishing. Despite the fast-paced digital age we live in, fishing presents a wonderful opportunity for fathers and their children to connect, forge exciting and unforgettable experiences, and relish the beauty of the worthy outdoors together.

Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group (and proud father of an 11-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter), affirms that fishing has always been a cherished pursuit for nurturing the bond between fathers and kids. “It offers a unique setting where generations can exchange tales, impart valuable life skills, and simply indulge in one another’s company, away from the distractions of everyday life.”

He believes that whether casting a line in salt or freshwater, fishing instils qualities such as patience, perseverance, and a respect for nature—an invaluable gift that extends far beyond the thrill of catching (and releasing) a fish.

Shaun shares his preferred fishing destinations within First Group properties, perfect for dads, lads and lasses to explore during the forthcoming June/July school holidays:

Saltwater Fishing:

Hole in the Wall Resort in Coffee Bay, Eastern Cape
Perna Perna St Lucia in St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal
La Cote d’Azur in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal
Umhlanga Sands in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal
Selborne Golf Estate, Hotel and Spa in Pennington, KwaZulu-Natal

River & Dam Fishing:

Bushman’s Nek Berg and Trout Resort in Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal
Magalies Park in Hartbeespoort, North West Province
Midlands Saddle and Trout Resort in Mooi River, KwaZulu-Natal
Qwantani Resort in Harrismith at the Sterkfontein Dam, KwaZulu-Natal

“These fishing destinations showcase breathtaking landscapes and serene surroundings and provide dads and their youngsters with an opportunity to reel in distinguished catches while creating lasting, magical memories that will be treasured for years to arrive,” Lamont concludes.
