Helplink — the AI-powered platform transforming South Africa’s informal economy is sponsoring four entrepreneurial paddlers from challenging backgrounds to take on the Prescient Freedom Paddle around Robben Island on 27 April 2026, aligning the endurance race with Freedom Day and the island’s powerful legacy of resilience.

Held in Table Bay, the Prescient Freedom Paddle is one of South Africa’s most recognised ocean events. This year the 27 km race carries added symbolic weight, circling the very place where Nelson Mandela forged the qualities of endurance, discipline and leadership that continue to inspire the nation.

Building on a Narrative of Grit and Growth

Setting up and sustaining a business requires tremendous grit and determination — much like navigating the unpredictable conditions of an ocean race. Helplink’s involvement in endurance sport deliberately draws this parallel, showing that the mindset needed to succeed in business is the same one required to conquer open water.

“Grit and growth go hand in hand — whether you’re navigating the ocean or building a business,” says Adelaide McKelvey, Project Director of Helplink.

“This race brings that reality closer to everyday South Africans, where the challenge may look different, but the mindset required is exactly the same.”

From Performance to Participation

While endurance racing tests physical limits, the Prescient Freedom Paddle offers an inclusive platform that mirrors the diversity of South Africa’s entrepreneurial landscape. The Helplink-sponsored team includes Phola Myende, Sibusiso Pheneas (Sosi) Zulu, Sandile Menjenjalo and Andile Mezula — each from challenging backgrounds yet embody the perseverance and determination needed to overcome adversity and achieve success regardless of their circumstances.

“Helplink has played such a vital role in my journey,” says Sibusiso Pheneas (Sosi) Zulu. “Their support has been incredible, the AI training, structured mentorship and ongoing guidance have given me the tools and confidence to keep pushing forward every day. Whether I’m training for this paddle or growing my business, Helplink has helped me adapt, stay resilient and believe that I can turn challenges into real opportunities.”

Turning Resilience into Opportunity

Helplink’s involvement in endurance sport is intentional — using real-world performance environments to demonstrate the resilience required to build and sustain a business.

The platform combines AI-enabled skills development with structured mentorship, supporting micro-entrepreneurs as they transition into more formal, sustainable markets.

A Call to Action

Helplink invites corporate partners and funders who share a commitment to South Africa’s micro-enterprise sector to get involved.  By supporting skills development and enterprise programmes like this, organisations can help turn resilience into real economic opportunity and show that, with the right backing and mindset, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary outcomes.
