His story has the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster. But for Daniel Janse van Rensburg, the reality of life in Equatorial Guinea’s notorious Black Beach prison was nothing less than a living hell. Daniel was kidnapped and held captive without charge for almost two years following a failed business deal with a politician. In an exclusive television interview, Daniel tells Carte Blanche of the horror of imprisonment and surviving rotten food, disease and gangsters, before finally paying a bribe to secure his freedom.

On December 10, 2008, Bernard Madoff, who, through the defrauding of his clients, had created one of the most prominent financial firms on Wall Street, told sons that his investments were “all one big lie”. The following day he was arrested and charged with a single count of securities fraud. As of December 2008, the paper losses were estimated to be $65 billion, easily making it the largest fraud in history.Mark Madoff was found dead in his Manhattan apartment at 158 Mercer Street. Using a dog leash tied to a beam, he had hanged himself from the ceiling. His suicide occurred on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest. Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison on June 29, 2009. He died in prison in 2021.
