Gauteng funding delays put thousands of beneficiaries at risk, organisations warn

MEC blames budget cuts and errors in applications

The Gauteng Care Crisis Committee has warned that delays in payments from the provincial social development department to non-profit organisations have put at least 542 jobs and 8,485 beneficiaries at risk. Illustration: Lisa Nelson

The Gauteng Care Crisis Committee has warned that funding delays by the Gauteng Department of Social Development have put 542 jobs and 8,485 beneficiaries at risk.
The Social Development MEC blamed budget cuts and application errors for the delays and said its children and families programmes had seen a R202-million budget decrease.
According to the crisis committee, among the organisations already affected are a homeless shelter, a lifeline for abused women and drug treatment centres.
