Gauteng government says “impossible” to pay welfare organisations on time

Non-profits wait weeks for quarterly payments

The Gauteng Department of Social Development has paid less than half its budget for social welfare organisations for the second quarter.
The department’s director for NPO funding, Lerato Bob, said on Thursday that it is “impossible” to pay all organisations at the same time, because Provincial Treasury disburses only a portion of the budget every week.
Organisations have been unable to pay staff due to the delays in payment.
