A local fisherman is missing after reportedly being swept off rocks near to the Gordons Bay Battery, near to Rocky Bay, between Gordons Bay and the Steenbras River Mouth.
On Saturday, 5 July, at 10h29, NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew and the CoCT (City of Cape Town) water rescue network were activated following reports of an angler, a 43 year old male, from Blue Downs, Cape Town, swept off rocks by waves while fishing.
NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew responded to the NSRI Gordons Bay station 9 rescue base where the NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski was launched.
An NSRI rescue vehicle, NSRI rescue swimmers, the SA Police Services, WC Government Health EMS and an EMS rescue squad, ER24 ambulance services and Cape Town Traffic Services responded.
The EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter was activated by Metro EMS control.
Police WPDS (Water Policing and Diving Services) were alerted.
On arrival on the scene a search commenced for the missing man.
An extensive air, sea and shoreline search, in rough sea conditions, has revealed no signs of the missing man.
Police divers (WPDS) are tasked in ongoing search efforts.
