Historic U18 Clean Sweep

The 2026 Under-18 International Series, which concluded over the weekend at Stellenberg High School north of Cape Town, marked the first time both the SA U18 and SA U18 ‘A’ sides have finished this event unbeaten.

The historic six-from-six clean sweep achieved by the two SA U18 teams not only marked a significant milestone for South African schoolboy rugby, but also reinforced the value of SA Rugby’s Elite Player Development (EPD) structures and the alignment between schools, provincial unions, franchises and national teams.

For the first time in the history of the competition, both South African teams completed their campaigns unbeaten. In the last two weeks, the SA U18s have beaten France (52-7), Ireland (51-15), and England (68-40), while the ‘A’ team were victorious against Ireland (32-31), Georgia (20-0), and France (51-26).

SA U18 head coach Lwazi Zangqa, who was at the helm of the side that managed to go unbeaten this year and last year, believes the success belongs as much to South Africa’s school rugby system as it does to the national programme.

“Us as selectors and coaches probably have the easiest job in just identifying the talent, but this is bred through many years of school pre-seasons, off-seasons, and in-seasons,” said Zangqa.

“It would be an injustice not to acknowledge how much South African schools’ rugby programmes contribute towards the pathway of what South African rugby can produce, as well as the successful high-performance work through the EPD.”

SA Rugby stablished the U18 International Series more than a decade ago with the purpose of it serving as a bridge between schoolboy rugby and international participation. Ever since, the EPD pipeline has been supported by the FNB U18 Craven Week and SA Schools structures, providing a clear pathway to the Junior Springboks and beyond.

The U18 International Series continues to serve as one of the most important stepping stones in South African rugby’s talent pipeline. It provides a platform for the country’s best young players to test themselves against international opposition, while giving coaches and selectors an opportunity to assess future Junior Springboks.

Over the last few seasons, the competition has become a proven breeding ground for future stars, with numerous former SA Schools and SA U18 players progressing rapidly through the professional and national teams’ ranks.

Zangqa also credited the influence of South Africa’s successful junior national coaching structures during the tournament, with valuable input provided by the Junior Bok coaches and technical staff by those who have recently guided the SA U20s to global success the past two years.

“They are seasoned veterans, and having them there to offer insights on things we might have missed was really invaluable,” said Zangqa.

“The collaboration between the various national age-group programmes is a key component of SA Rugby’s player development strategy, ensuring consistency across coaching philosophies, playing principles and performance standards.”

That level of alignment was evident throughout the tournament as both South African teams U18 performed with confidence against quality international opposition.

While the unbeaten records and historic clean sweep will undoubtedly be remembered, perhaps the bigger success story lies in what the performances represent.

The SA U18 side have now won nine games on a trot over a three-year period against the likes of England, France, Ireland and Georgia, whilst the ‘A’ side have been equally impressive, winning five of their last six matches at the annual U18 International Series.

The SA U18 side was captained by Jacobus de Villiers, the Oakdale and SWD No 8, who had an outstanding tournament, leading by example and scoring five tries off the back of some impressive forward surges by his powerful pack.
