IDAC Head Andrea Johnson Resigns

27 July 2026 by Guest

Statement by Adv Glynnis Breytenbach MP – DA Spokesperson on Justice and Constitutional Development:

The Democratic Alliance (DA) notes the resignation of the Investigating Director and Head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Andrea Johnson, with immediate effect, following evidence presented before the Madlanga Commission.

Ms Johnson’s resignation comes at a time when serious questions have been raised through the Commission’s proceedings. It is appropriate that the Commission be allowed to complete its work independently and without interference, so that all relevant facts can be properly established.

The DA will not now speculate on the implications of the evidence or seek to pre-empt the Commission’s findings. However, public confidence in institutions tasked with combating corruption depends on transparency, accountability, and the willingness of those entrusted with public responsibilities to be held to the highest ethical standards.

The resignation of Ms Johnson underscores the importance of allowing the Commission to continue its work without fear, favour or prejudice. South Africans deserve a full and credible account of the matters before the Commission, together with appropriate action where wrongdoing is ultimately established.

The evidence presented underscores the dire need for a truly independent Anti Corruption body situated outside of the National Prosecuting Authority.

The DA will continue to monitor developments closely and remains committed to strengthening the integrity, independence and credibility of South Africa’s anti-corruption bodies.
