R10-million rehabilitation sees people flocking to this natural haven

Princess Vlei on the Cape Flats was one of very few nature spaces that people of colour could visit during apartheid. The area was fondly known as “Gala land” or “Claremont beach” by the locals who could not access many of the peninsula’s segregated beaches.
But over time, the Vlei became neglected and vandalised until a group formed the Princess Vlei Forum and spent years fighting to restore the area to its former glory.
