Informal settlement destroyed by Operation Prosper must be rebuilt, court rules

Thousands of people left homeless, says the SAHRC

The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has ordered the City of Ekhurhuleni to rebuild the N12/Albert Luthuli informal settlement in Benoni. Illustration: Lisa Nelson

Thousands of people were evicted from land in Benoni in May under Operation Prosper.
The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has ordered that the people be allowed to return and that the the City of Ekhurhuleni provide them with new temporary homes.
The informal settlement was established in 2011, after 800 families were unlawfully evicted by the City from Bapsfontein and the Constitutional Court ordered that they be provided with housing in Benoni.
