Thursday, 6 August 2026: Innovation took centre stage at the Central University of Technology’s Boet Troskie Hall, where Bloemfontein’s top young scientists showcased their research and problem-solving skills.
Hosted at the Central University of Technology’s Boet Troskie Hall on 1 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 82 research projects, including group projects, showcased by 98 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students at NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.
This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 22 entries, followed by Environmental Studies (13), and Energy, Social Sciences and Biomedical and Medical Sciences with 10 entries each.
The Eskom Expo’s Bloemfontein Regional Science Fair Director, Renier Watson, said: “The 2026 Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair was a celebration of the excitement and wonder of science. Science exhibitions and awesome science shows filled the hall with loud bangs, fascinating demonstrations and continuous gasps of amazement. The competition itself was both exciting and nerve-racking, creating an atmosphere of anticipation, enthusiasm and celebration. The awards ceremony was a fitting conclusion, recognising the outstanding achievements of our young scientists with a host of well-deserved prizes. Bloemfontein, often referred to as an incubator of brilliance, once again proved why it is renowned for developing some of South Africa’s most innovative young minds.”
During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research, innovation and presentation. A total of 15 Gold medals, 25 Silver medals and 14 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom.
