Thursday, 6 August 2026: Innovation took centre stage at the Central University of Technology’s Boet Troskie Hall, where Bloemfontein’s top young scientists showcased their research and problem-solving skills.

Hosted at the Central University of Technology’s Boet Troskie Hall on 1 August 2026, the Regional Science Fair featured 82 research projects, including group projects, showcased by 98 learners in Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students at NC(V) Level 2-4. Participants advanced to the Regional Science Fair after taking part in a range of Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received valuable guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

This year’s projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo categories. The most popular category was Engineering, which attracted 22 entries, followed by Environmental Studies (13), and Energy, Social Sciences and Biomedical and Medical Sciences with 10 entries each.

The Eskom Expo’s Bloemfontein Regional Science Fair Director, Renier Watson, said: “The 2026 Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair was a celebration of the excitement and wonder of science. Science exhibitions and awesome science shows filled the hall with loud bangs, fascinating demonstrations and continuous gasps of amazement. The competition itself was both exciting and nerve-racking, creating an atmosphere of anticipation, enthusiasm and celebration. The awards ceremony was a fitting conclusion, recognising the outstanding achievements of our young scientists with a host of well-deserved prizes. Bloemfontein, often referred to as an incubator of brilliance, once again proved why it is renowned for developing some of South Africa’s most innovative young minds.”

During the awards ceremony, young scientists were recognised for excellence in scientific research, innovation and presentation. A total of 15 Gold medals, 25 Silver medals and 14 Bronze medals were awarded. The outstanding young scientists were honoured with prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom. The award recipients, who received smart watches, were as follows:

Award Recipient
Best Female Rebecca Anne Botha, a homeschooled learner
Best Energy Project Jemma Myburgh from Eunice High School
Best Innovation Luhandré Opperman from Martie du Plessis Secondary School
Best Development Project Rorisang Mohlobuli from Hoërskool Bloemfontein

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation, Ms Mologadi Motshele, said: “At Eskom, we recognise that sustained investment in STEM education is essential to building South Africa’s future skills pipeline. Through our support of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, we are nurturing the next generation of scientists, engineers, researchers and innovators who will drive economic growth and sustainable development. We were encouraged by the outstanding research and innovation showcased at this year’s Regional Science Fairs, which reflect the exceptional talent and potential of our young people. We congratulate every learner who participated.”

Other special awards were also presented during the awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding participation and achievement throughout the Eskom Expo programme. Hohle Primary School received the award for the Highest Number of Entries at the District Expo, recognising the school’s outstanding commitment to learner participation and scientific research.

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “Congratulations to all the young scientists who participated in the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair. These regional events across the country serve as the official gateway for school‑level innovation, jointly supported by the Departments of Basic Education and Science, Technology, and Innovation. Learners turned curiosity into rigorous inquiry, transforming ideas into experiments that tackle real challenges and spark fresh solutions. Judges reported a marked improvement in project quality, with stronger methods and clearer communication. Heartfelt thanks to the regional committee and the many volunteers for their dedication, and to the title sponsor, Eskom and our regional partners for their generous support. Best wishes to the finalists advancing to the International Science Fair.”

Parents and teachers are encouraged to attend a Regional Science Fair in their area with their children and learners to experience firsthand the creativity and innovation of South Africa’s young scientists, and to inspire the next generation of researchers to participate in next year’s Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.
