Interview: Proteas Cricket Bowling Coach Piet Botha

Piet Botha, was born in the Vaal Triangle where he grew up as a young cricketer representing the Vaal Triangle at primary and high school. He represented Vaal schools as well as South African Country districts schools at the Nuffield week since grade 10. He also played club cricket as a school boy at Meyerton Club and also represented the South African Country Districts Senior Men’s team as a matriculant.

After school he attended Rand Afrikaans University from where he made his first-class debut for Transvaal ‘B’ in 1987 as a 21-year-old. He went on to represent Transvaal where he opened the batting with Jimmy Cook under the captaincy of Clive Rice. Piet moved to Border in 1992 where he played for a further 10 years for the province. While’s at Border, Piet started his coaching career in 1997 as the Border Academy coach during the winter months. Piet did every the CSA coaching levels and is currently a CSA Level 4 coach. He also completed the Gary Kirsten CoachED course in 2021.

During his coaching career he coached Eastern Province before becoming the Warriors assistant coach under Mickey Arthur and Russell Domingo. Piet took over as the Warriors coach from 2011-2014 before he returned as the Eastern Province Coach. During his coaching career he also assisted the South African ‘A’ side as a bowling coach on various tours from 2010 until 2021. Piet was also fraction of the South African Emerging side In 2020 and assisted at various CSA High Performance Camps. Before Joining The Garden Route Badgers, Piet spent a 2 seasons with Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch as the Head of Cricket.

Piet is married to wife Marthie and they believe two daughters, Rouxle and Leona
