Jaguar TCS Racing double-podium

27 May 2024 by Alan

The inaugural Shanghai E-Prix saw Jaguar TCS Racing driver Mitch Evans take his second win of the 2024 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, with teammate and Drivers’ Championship leader, Nick Cassidy, finishing in third place.

With a second double-podium finish this season, Jaguar TCS Racing extend its lead in the Teams’ World Championship.

At the Shanghai International Circuit, Mitch Evans, who qualified in third position, carefully managed the energy efficiency of his Jaguar I-TYPE 6 throughout the race. The Kiwi tactically took both his Attack Mode activations by lap 11 while never deviating from the top six. Mitch then took the lead on lap 13 from the Porsche of António Félix da Costa. Mitch continued to battle in the lead group for the remainder of the race. By lap 20, Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein led again, swapping positions with Mitch for the lead twice more by lap 28. Mitch then made a decisive and dramatic move for the lead around the outside of Turn 1 on the final lap of the 29-lap race.

Championship leader, Nick Cassidy, drove an incredible race to move up from tenth on the grid to third place – his eighth podium finish of the season and his fifth in succession. The early laps saw Nick conserve energy, running outside the top ten, before beginning to move through the pack from lap 12 onwards. Halfway through the E-Prix, Nick had progressed to fifth place and, with a significant energy advantage over the drivers ahead, on lap 25 he moved into third. Nick held position behind Mitch, allowing his teammate to attack for the win, and narrowly missed taking second place on the very last corner.

Jaguar TCS Racing completed Round 12 of the 2024 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the second of two races in Shanghai this weekend, with Nick Cassidy in P4 and teammate Mitch Evans in P5.

Following a double-podium in Round 11, Jaguar TCS Racing scored a total of 62 points over the race weekend to leave with a 73-point lead in the Teams’ World Championship.

Nick Cassidy leads the Drivers’ World Championship by 25 points, with Mitch Evans moving up to third place.

James Barclay, Managing Director, JLR Motorsport and Jaguar TCS Racing Team Principal: “At the end of what has been an incredible race weekend in Shanghai we leave with the win and double-podium in R11 and R12, securing really important Championship points. It was a nail-biting race weekend. We expected rain but it didn’t come, so it was a fast-paced race from early on. The team and the drivers managed the race well, we made the progress and challenged for the podium, and in the end we are very happy to leave with vital Championship points. We are happy with our weekend of work here in Shanghai and the team has worked hard and really effectively all the way through. It’s hard with such strong competition but we have delivered one of our best ever points scoring weekends at a critical time. We now turn our focus to Portland and Round 13 and 14 and the last two weekends of the season.”

Mitch Evans, Jaguar TCS Racing driver, #9: “It’s been a huge points haul for the team this weekend in Shanghai. Getting the win and double podium in R11, and then a fourth and fifth place in R12 added great points and helps us a lot in the Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships. We have a small break now before we attack the last four races.”

Nick Cassidy, Jaguar TCS Racing driver, #37: “The team is doing an amazing job this year and I’m super lucky to be in this position. It’s been a really good weekend. There are still four races left, 100-odd points still available, it will be tough, but we’ll be giving it our all.”

Rounds 13 and 14 of the 2024 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship take place in Portland on 29 and 30 June.
