South Africa Might Face Backlash After Closing Taiwan’s Office: The South African government has forced Taiwan’s representative office to move out of its capital, Pretoria, by the end of October, signaling the biggest diplomatic turmoil between the two nations since the establishment of the office in 1998.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) released a statement last week to announce the move. COSATU questions vetting process following former Jhb Mayor’s arrest: COSATU in Gauteng says accusations levelled against former Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda raises serious concerns regarding vetting processes.
There are growing calls for Gwamanda to step down from his role as the City’s Community Development MMC following his arrest last Friday.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Gwamanda appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on the same day together with his co-accused Mduduzi Zonde.
They are charged with fraud amounting to R12 000.
They were both released on R2 000 bail and the case has been postponed to the 3rd of December.

South African authorities search for source of food poisoning: Authorities in South Africa believe a chemical agent may be to blame for recent cases of illness in the country.
Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi said a search is underway for the agent causing sickness. At least five schoolchildren are known to have died.

Over 40 students hospitalized for suspected food poisoning in South Africa: A total of 43 learners from a primary school in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa, were sent to hospital on Monday for suspected food poisoning, local education authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The provincial education department said the learners from Ngaqa Primary School in Mtubatuba fell ill after consuming snacks purchased from street vendors outside the school.
“The students were rushed to a local clinic and were released upon medical treatment. Some tests were taken to the laboratory,” said Muzi Mhlambi, spokesperson for the Department of Education in Kwazulu-Natal Province.

Armed robbers make off with jewellery at Joburg’s Clearwater Mall: Police are on the scene of a robbery at Clear Water Mall in Rooderpoort.
It’s understood six suspects entered a jewellery store and began shooting when they couldn’t gain access to the safe.
According to the shopping centre, the “suspects fled with an undisclosed number of items”.
The latest is that one suspect has been shot and taken to hospital.
