Kaya Barker (3) was born with a brainstem malformation, Pontine Tegmental Cap Dysplasia, a condition so rare there are fewer than 100 people with it globally. This impacts every aspect of her life, including hearing, breathing, sleep, and mobility. Another area that is impacted is vision, and without nerve transplant surgery, she will lose her vision. Her mother, Andrea Barker, grew up in Scottburgh where her family still reside. Andrea now lives with her husband, Davyn, and their two girls in Ireland. In an effort to save Kaya’s vision, the family is calling on locals to join in a #5kforkaya fundraiser walk to raise money for the medical costs and create awareness. \’Brave\’ is one of those words that has been bleached of most of its meaning these days, thanks to far too many appearances in the glaring light of ad slogans and corporate Public Relations. I never thought about anything as brave anymore; it just seemed like a flabby, glib cliche. – Susan Orlean

If the ad is bad people get turned off. That\’s 125 million potential viewers, so you just killed reach. But there\’s also a big potential payoff. I think it does pay off because you get a lot of traffic, a lot of free public relations(in media stories). It helps position themselves for the next round of financing. – Charlene Li
