Judges grill Treasury on SRD grant

In the Supreme Court of Appeal on Tuesday, government defended the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant regulations, which the High Court in Pretoria had found to be unconstitutional.
The National Treasury warned that expanding the SRD grant could cost up to R139-billion a year. It said further spending was unaffordable.
The judges questioned whether the online system unfairly excludes vulnerable people without phones, internet access or digital skills, and whether government’s existing kiosks and assistance measures were enough.
Judgment was reserved.
