HOWICK: Cricket arrived in Mpophomeni in a big way on Thursday as Cricket South Africa (CSA) and KwaZulu-Natal Inland Cricket Union hosted the area’s first-ever KFC Mini-Cricket Community Festival in celebration of International Day of Play.
Over 300 learners from seven local primary schools gathered at Mpophomeni Sport Ground for a morning dedicated to fun, movement, learning and discovery through cricket, marking an important milestone in efforts to introduce and grow the game in the community.
Representing Zamthule Primary School, Qhamukile Primary School, Nogqaza Primary School, Cosmo Primary School, Thembelihle Primary School, Sbongo Primary School, and Nhlanhleni Primary School, the learners participated in a series of KFC Mini-Cricket activities and games led by volunteer coaches.
While the festival celebrated every child’s right to play, it also represented something much bigger, the beginning of a new chapter for cricket in Mpophomeni.
CSA Executive for Domestic Cricket, David Mokopanele, commented;
“This first-ever KFC Mini-Cricket Community Festival in Mpophomeni is a reflection of Cricket South Africa’s commitment to taking the game into communities where cricket has traditionally had a limited presence and creating opportunities for more children to experience the sport for the first time.
“Through partnerships with schools, teachers, volunteer coaches and local cricket structures, we are building sustainable pathways that not only introduce children to cricket but also create opportunities for them to remain connected to the game throughout their lives, whether as players, coaches, officials or supporters.
“International Day of Play reminds us that play is fundamental to every child’s development. Beyond learning cricket skills, today was about giving young people a safe space to be active, build confidence, develop friendships and experience the joy that sport can bring,” said Mokopanele.
“There is no better way to celebrate the International Day of Play than to give even more kids the opportunity to play the game. The KFC Mini-Cricket partnership with Cricket South Africa continues to be an unbelievable way for KFC’s ambition to feed people’s potential and ensure we make seats at the table for all.
“This latest addition to the programme is a further proof point on how this programme continues to bring the power of sport, community and opportunity to even more communities.
