28 June 2023 by AMC

The Department of Employment and Labour’s Employment Services Board (ES Board) is holding its inaugural meeting to orientate its new Board members at Kievits Kroon Wine Estate in Pretoria.

The Department of Employment and Labour’s Employment Services Board (ES Board) is holding its inaugural meeting to orientate its recent Board members at Kievits Kroon Wine Estate in Pretoria.

The two-day meeting, which commenced yesterday and concludes today, is also aimed at handing over the previous Board’s report from its inception and for the newly established ES Board to hold its first meeting.

The ES Board is an advisory body to the Minister of Employment and Labour and, among other things, is responsible for:

  • Work opportunities;
  • The criteria for the registration and de-registration of private employment agencies and the implementation and enforcement of the provisions of this Act applicable to private employment agencies;
  • The development of criteria and guidelines for the implementation of this Act and the exercise of any function in terms of this Act;
  • The promotion of supported work for persons with disabilities as contemplated by Chapter 6;
  • Any regulations that the Minister may, or must fabricate in terms of this Act;
  • The publication of an annual employment services report; and
  • Any other matter related to employment services, on request of the Minister or NEDLAC.

The ES Board’s inauguration follows its appointment by the Minister of Employment and Labour on 10 April 2023, the term of which will stay on 31 March 2028.

The Employment Services Board, which is established by the provisions of Section 21 of the Employment Services Act No.4 of 2014, is constituted by each of the four NEDLAC Constituencies including the State, and is chaired by an Independent Chairperson of the ES Board who is appointed by the Minister.

The Department’s Deputy Director-General: Public Employment Services Branch, Sam Morotoba, said the purpose of the two-day session is to orientate the novel Board members.

“The session is basically an orientation workshop for the recent Board members. To orientate them on the functioning of the Board, the law and legislations.

“The purpose is to outline the fundamental rules of engagement for the effective and efficient functioning of the Board. To orientate them about the department’s integrity and ethics management, finance related matters and compliance and handing over the ES Report of the previous members,” Morotoba said.

The meeting is expected to highlight the strategic objectives, achievements, challenges experienced and outstanding activities with the Employment Services Board. – SAnews.gov.za
