Following the grand opening of the Middle East’s first ornately carved Hindu Mandir (temple) in Abu Dhabi— unveiled by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the active support of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan—the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) turns its focus to South Africa. The inauguration of the largest Hindu Temple and Cultural Complex in the Southern Hemisphere, located in Johannesburg, marks a historic milestone for BAPS, a globally renowned socio spiritual organization.

To commemorate this monumental occasion, BAPS will host a 12-day Festival of Hope and Unity in February 2025. Spanning 5.9 hectares (14 acres) in Northriding, Johannesburg, the complex is envisioned as a hub for multicultural exchange, interreligious dialogue, and the community and humanitarian initiatives spearheaded by BAPS in South Africa.

The BAPS Hindu Mandir and Cultural Complex stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of the South African Indian community, which has overcome the adversities of indentured labour and apartheid. It reflects their enduring contributions to South Africa and their confidence in its future as a home for generations to come.

With the congratulatory support of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who unveiled the project during his last visit to South Africa, the Dedication Ceremony of Phase 1 will take place on Sunday, 2 February 2025 from 6:00 p.m. onwards. The event will feature the presence of South African cabinet-level leaders, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj—the global spiritual leader of BAPS—and leaders from various faiths, business sectors, and social organisations.

This momentous occasion signifies a seamless integration of Indian art and culture into the African landscape, brought to life through music, dance, and prayer inspired by both traditions. As media interviews will be arranged for members of the press in attendance, we kindly request an RSVP for this historic event.

The BAPS Hindu Mandir and Cultural Complex is more than a spiritual space; it is a hub for cultural enrichment, humanitarian service, and interreligious dialogue. The facility will enhance the reach of BAPS Charities’ humanitarian programs in South Africa and provide a platform to foster harmony and understanding among
diverse communities.

The complex features an exceptional scale and design, spanning over 37,000 square meters, including a Cultural Complex of 32,000 square meters and a Traditional Hindu Mandir covering 2,500 square meters. Constructed with sustainable practices, the project integrates thousands of tons of steel and concrete, while prioritizing water efficiency, solar readiness, and environmental conservation through the planting of over 500 trees.
