Lumumba Chia fled to South Africa 27 years ago. He is not allowed to leave

Refugees and stateless people face a long road to getting documentation

Lumumba Chia, who has lived in South Africa for more than 20 years, has been unable to obtain travel documents despite following the required processes.
He spoke at a World Refugee Day symposium in Cape Town, which highlighted the barriers faced by refugees, undocumented migrants and stateless people in accessing identity documents, citizenship and other basic rights.
While South Africa has legal protections aimed at preventing statelessness, poor implementation and administrative obstacles persist.
