Marvel and Magic: The Gathering fans get ready for one of the biggest tabletop team-ups yet, as Magic: The Gathering Marvel Super Heroes brings comic book icons into the world of strategy card play.

Releasing in June 2026, the new collection invites players to build dream teams of heroes and villains, with characters such as Captain America, Hulk, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Quicksilver, Galactus, Sentry and more stepping from the pages of Marvel Comics onto the battlefield. The collection takes the drama, powers and personalities of Marvel’s greatest characters and translates them into cards that can be played, collected, traded, appreciated and displayed.

Magic players will love the gameplay
For longtime Magic players, the appeal lies in seeing how each hero or villain is interpreted through gameplay. Quicksilver’s speed, Hulk’s strength and Doctor Doom’s command of power all offer natural storytelling opportunities in card form. For newer fans, especially Marvel lovers who may not yet play Magic, this set creates a reason to start. The Beginner Box, for example, introduces players through a guided battle between Captain America and Iron Man, while Jumpstart Boosters allow players to shuffle two packs together and play almost immediately.

Discovery and display for collectors
Collectors will also have plenty to chase. The set includes Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, Scene Boxes and special treatments, including The Mind Stone, the second of six Infinity Stone headliner cards. Collector Boosters may include premium versions, foils, Borderless Source Material cards and other collectible finishes, making the set as much about display and discovery as it is about gameplay.

Artwork by amazing artists
The artwork is a major part of the appeal. The current card gallery includes artists such as Adam Hughes, Alex Ross, Anna Podedworna, Bill Sienkiewicz, Bob Layton and Carissa Susilo, bringing together names associated with comic books, fine art, concept art and dynamic character work. That mix gives the cards a strong visual identity, with some pieces feeling like miniature comic covers and others like action scenes frozen at the perfect moment. The different artwork styles also add to the beauty of the cards individually and as a whole.

In an article published on Marvel.com, Magic: The Gathering’s head designer Mark Rosewater, said that his decades of reading comics felt like “extensive prep work” for the set, adding that “getting to work on Marvel Super Heroes was truly a dream project for me”.

High expectations
Actor Gabriel Luna (The Last of Us, Terminator, and Marvel’s Ghost Rider) is a dedicated MTG player, so he was thrilled to explore the soon to be released set during a Command Zone Studios feature. He praised the artwork and how the mechanics fit the Marvel theme, particularly noting the flavour of the Infinity Stones – six immensely powerful cosmic gems from Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he was disappointed that there wasn’t a Ghost Rider card, he loved the artwork and artistic styles of the cards.

Great crossover
For South African fans, Stefan Roets of Solarpop says the crossover captures exactly why trading card games continue to grow. “This is the kind of release that brings different fandoms to the same table. Marvel fans get to see their favourite characters in a new way, while Magic players get fresh mechanics, beautiful artwork and a set that feels event-worthy.”

“Whether for the gameplay, the art or the thrill of pulling a favourite hero from a pack, I think Magic: The Gathering Marvel Super Heroes is a must-watch release for players, collectors and comic book fans alike,” concludes Roets.
