Mashatile to commemorate Harvest Day with Free State apple farmers

Strategies for enhancing the agricultural sector, fostering economic growth, and promoting job creation will form part of Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s visit to the Free State.

Mashatile will commemorate Harvest Day at the Remmoho Investment in Agriculture Farm in Bethlehem on Thursday, 27 February.

According to a statement from the Deputy President’s Office, the event will highlight key milestones in agricultural development, underscoring government’s dedication to fostering an inclusive agricultural sector and creating job opportunities within the community.

As chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Agriculture and Land Reform, the Deputy President will meet with approximately 400 local farmers, agricultural stakeholders and commodity organisations.

“During his visit, the Deputy President will witness firsthand the investments in apple export and processing facilities in the province, which showcases the innovative efforts to enhance agricultural production and support local farmers, especially black farmers, in growing production,” the statement read.

The visit will also highlight the role of Remmoho Investment in Agriculture, which contributes to government’s vision of growing an inclusive agricultural sector, as enshrined in the Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan (AAMP).

“The company’s investments in the agricultural space are pivotal in breaking new frontiers to create employment opportunities and achieve food security in South Africa,” the statment said.

The Presidency said the event will also be a celebration of agricultural success stories and an opportunity to underscore how such initiatives align with government efforts to foster economic development and food security.

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen and Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso will accompany the Deputy President on his visit.
