Mass sardine die-off: new threat to African Penguins?

Researchers say it’s too early to draw firm conclusions

Conservationists are concerned that a mass sardine die-off, possibly from the pilchard herpesvirus pathogen, could reduce food stocks for the already critically endangered African Penguins.
Weight loss has already been recorded in some birds at three local penguin breeding colonies.
Similar sardine die-offs in Australia led to starvation and reduced breeding success for several years for the Little Penguin.
