9 June 2025 – Aden McCarthy has displayed confidence and focus ahead of the COSAFA Cup final group stage match against Mauritius at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Kickoff is at 15h00

The 21-year-old defender emphasised that the team has worked tirelessly in training in the last few days, studying Mauritius and sharpening their tactics to ensure a strong performance in a match that could pave the way to the knockout stages of the regional tournament. McCarthy said the group is mentally and physically ready, determined to control possession, maintain defensive solidity and spark their campaign with a positive result tomorrow.

“Coming to Bloemfontein ahead of the COSAFA tournament, we did not have much time to prepare, but you know, we have players that are coachable and with us playing for our respective teams back home, you know that we come from a busy season. So, we just have to stick it through, and we came here with a mind-set ready to fight, and ready to conquer and win games. Unfortunately, the first game never went in our favour (Mozambique beat SA 1-0 in the opening match of the tournament).

“But we came back with a good fight for the second game (against Zimbabwe) and going into the third one (against Mauritius), I feel like as a team we are very prepared for that mentally and we are strong as well on the field. There’s no team that can dominate the ball as much as we do on the field, and we are just going to go with that in terms of our confidence in one another, our belief in one another and the belief coming from the technical team. We are just going to work as one team to overcome the opposition.”

South Africa head into tomorrow’s clash against Mauritius with a real sense of belief and determination among the squad with the support of fans behind them at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium.

South African Football: Aaron Mokoena holds the record for the most caps, with 108 appearances.
