Modernised Home Affairs Booking System

Statement by Adrian Roos MP – DA Spokesperson on Home Affairs:

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the announcement by Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, of a strengthened and more secure system for people to make online bookings to visit a Home Affairs office at a specific time and date.

The new online booking system, available at myhomeaffairsonline.dha.gov.za, is an important intervention aimed at restoring fairness and improving access to services. In particular, the upgraded booking platform is intended to end the manipulation and resale of appointments, helping to ensure that booking slots are freely available to the public rather than being monetised by syndicates.

For years, South Africans have faced unnecessary frustration when trying to access basic services such as IDs and passports. Long queues, unreliable systems, and the abuse of appointment slots by opportunistic middlemen have made a simple administrative process far more difficult than it should be. These days are coming to an end under the Minister’s sweeping reforms.

The DA supports the Department’s broader system modernisation that is a clear shift away from outdated paper-based systems that served a corrupt syndicate in Home Affairs, towards a more reliable digital model that places citizens first.

The Department’s wider digital reform programme has already begun to produce encouraging results. A whopping 127,364 Smart IDs have been issued in just 9 weeks since the launch of Smart ID services through bank branches. This means that 2800 extra people per day are able to register a company, apply for a job, access grant or NSFAS funding, register for matric exams, or apply for a driver’s license.

A functional Home Affairs system is not simply a matter of convenience. It is central to economic participation, public confidence, national security, and the ability of citizens to interact efficiently with the state. The DA believes South Africans deserve public services that are efficient, secure, and treated with the same urgency and professionalism expected in the private sector.

While considerable work remains to fully repair and modernise Home Affairs, these reforms indicate that meaningful progress is being made.

The DA will continue to support practical measures that improve service delivery, combat corruption, and restore dignity to citizens accessing essential government services.
