MPs call for urgent action on dental technicians

A standoff between CPUT and the SA Dental Technicians Council is preventing students from completing their practical training

MPs have asked the Department of Higher Education and Training to intervene in a dispute between the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and the South African Dental Technicians Council which is affecting students. Archive photo: Ashraf Hendricks

Parliament has asked the Department of Higher Education and Training to mediate in a dispute between the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and the South African Dental Technicians Council.
CPUT had to vacate premises in Tygerberg Hospital used for practical training of dental technicians.
While new premises were being prepared, the students were trained at CPUT Bellville campus.
But the council found these laboratories did not conform to requirements.
