NMB ASA 21.1km Championships Road Closures

The annual Nelson Mandela Bay ASA 21.1km championships will once again be held in Gqeberha, Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday, 3 June 2023, and will incorporate the ASA Half marathon Championships. The event has been awarded World Athletics Elite Label status and will be a mass participation event.

We are proud to showcase Gqeberha during the live broadcast on SuperSport, and trust that you will join us by cheering on the best runners in South Africa as they compete against each other for the National title.

Roads will be closed as follows:

  • 03h00 – 11h00 – Full road closure Seaside lanes from Driftsands Drive along Marine Drive to Admiralty way.
  • 03h00 – 11h00 – Full road closure Land side lanes from Admiralty Way to 2 nd Avenue
  • 03h00 – 11h00 – Full road closure Land side lanes from La Roche to Kings Beach
  • 05h00 – 09h00 – Full road closure Marine Drive from Admiralty Way to back gate of NMU
  • 06h00 – 09h15 – University Way from Gomery Rd to Admiralty Way.
  • 06h00 – 09h30 – Admiralty Way from University Way to Marine Drive

Alternative Routes

An alternative route towards Willows/Schoenies via Gomery Road, through NMU and into Marine Drive exiting factual, will be available for the duration of the morning.
Access between Admiralty and 2 nd Avenue is accesible via Erasmus Drive and Brighton Drive.

Assistance and Exceptions

As there will be no access along Marine drive between 2 nd avenue and Lodge Road, an arrangement has been made for businesses and residents, as well as emergency vehicles to access Lodge Road via the Boardwalk between 06h30 and 09h45. Enter the Boardwalk at the top entrance at the NMU circle.

Access to Pine Lodge or Sanccob will be available via the back gate of NMU, driving on the sea side lane. Access to the Golf Course can be obtained by crossing Admiralty at Brighton Drive, turning left onto grass and correct into coned lane in Marine Drive to the entrance of the golf course. Only available before 07h20 and after 09h30.

City Lodge, Brookes Hill and Town Lodge staff and guests will acquire one lane available towards the City until La Roche Drive.

Residents in the flats between La Roche and Kings Beach are requested to only park on the land side. One lane will be made available for residents to exit at all times.

Residents in Admiralty between University Way and Marine Drive, are requested to leave their premises with care and seek assistance from the closest marshal to assist you. Please proceed towards Brighton Drive and turn left. Please support your speed to a maximum of 20 kmh as there will be runners on the correct hand side lane, which will be coned.

Additional Road Closure

Total road closure of the short section between 8th Avenue and 9 th Avenue will be in force from 10h00 on Wednesday, 31 May 2023 until 14h00 on Saturday, 3 June 2023 to allow for setup of the finish line structures.

We will execute our utmost to assist motorists affected and request your co-operation to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone on the day.

It would be highly appreciated if you would inform your staff and clients of the road closure arrangements in spot, and feel free to near and cheer the athletes along the way.

Description:

Start in Marine Drive south of bus cease at exit from Pollok Beach. Race northern direction towards town, running with traffic. Continue past 2 nd Avenue, Boardwalk, Brookes Hill Drive, La Roche, along S-Bend facing traffic and turn at Driftsands to return loop to Pollok Beach. Continue along Marine Drive until past Admirality, still running with traffic.

After Admirality, maintain left of the cones until after the Golf Course, then crawl accurate to sprint facing traffic until the back gate of NMU. Turn correct and continue straight past Stadium, past Langdraai, factual at traffic circle and through North campus. Exit front gate of NMU North campus and turn precise into University Way. Turn proper into Admirality.

Continue running facing traffic until after Brighton Drive, cross over to LHS with traffic. Turn left into Marine Drive.

Race past the start and follow Northern loop until the finish line, situated past the bus stay after 8 th Avenue.
