Statement by Karabo Khakhau MP – DA National Spokesperson:
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is unsurprised that the EFF stands against Home Affairs services rolling out to bank branches across South Africa, because the EFF is an enemy of progress.
They are a party of violence and chaos, that has no real solutions to any problems in South Africa.
The launch of Home Affairs SmartID applications at bank branches of Capitec and Standard Bank is a groundbreaking leap forward for South Africans, and is the start of the end of queueing for hours outside Home Affairs branches.
SmartIDs replace the very insecure, and often forged Green ID Book which have allowed illegal immigrants to impersonate South African citizens. It clearly exposes the EFF that they would stand in the way of people converting to secure SmartIDs.
We reject the EFF’s position that they would prefer South Africans to stand in long queues at Home Affairs, and that the EFF would defend illegal immigrants who are using forged SA Green ID Books.
This is why the DA is determined to keep the EFF out of national government, and it is why the DA entered the Government of National Unity to prevent a “doomsday” where the EFF and MK party entered national government.
The DA is proud of Minister Schreiber’s barnstorming progress at Home Affairs, delivering Home Affairs @ home.

Fun South African Fact: South African Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first heart transplant on 3 December 1967 at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The groundbreaking surgery was carried out on Louis Washkansky and Dr. Barnard was assisted by a large and exceptional team of surgeons, nurses and technicians. One of Dr. Barnard’s assistants was Hamilton Naki, a black laboratory assistant who had worked previously as a gardener and went on to work in the animal laboratory at the University of Cape Town. He had assisted Dr Barnard with research leading to the transplant. In the apartheid days, Naki had no access to higher education due to his race. Despite being unable to access formal training, he learned from and assisted university researchers and went on to do amazing work.
Mother Night
A baby was born in South Africa. The village was very poor, and the makeshift hospital didn\’t have some necessary equipment.. such as scales.
The father however, was desperate to know the newborn baby\’s weight. After quite a bit of asking around, the hospital\’s chairman came up with an idea.
\”Five miles west, there\’s a butcher shop. The owner deals with meat, he should have a rather precise scale. You could just put your baby on the meat scale, and the weight reading you\’ll get should be pretty accurate.\”
And so the father departed westward. After much walking, with his newborn child cardled safely in his arms, he finally arrived at the butcher shop. He explained his dilemma to the shop owner, to witch the latter replied:
\”Don\’t worry, friend. It\’s not even a problem, I\’ll check it for you, free of charge.\” And so he took the child to the back, where the scale was located.
The father heard rumbling noises, and some scraping.. About a minute later the butcher came back.
\”About three pounds boneless\” He said.
