Bevan Geyser, NSRI Bakoven station commander, said: At 16h38, Sunday, 1 February, NSRI Bakoven duty crew and the CoCT (City of Cape Town) water rescue network were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Cosy Bay, Oudekraal (on the Atlantic Seaboard, between Bakoven and Llandudno).
NSRI Bakoven crew responded to the NSRI Bakoven station 2 rescue base where the NSRI rescue craft Gemini Legend was launched.
NSRI rescue swimmers, from NSRI Bakoven, NSRI Hout Bay and from NSRI Table Bay, an NSRI Hout Bay rescue vehicle, an NSRI Table Bay rescue vehicle, CoCT (City of Cape Town) lifeguards, WC Government Health EMS rescue squad and an EMS Metro Rescue Drone Unit responded.
The SA Police Services were alerted and Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services placed their Fire and Rescue Services rescue divers on alert.
On arrival on the scene NSRI rescue swimmers entered the water conducting free dive search efforts for an unidentified male reported by eyewitnesses to have entered the water and who appeared to get into difficulties before disappearing under water.
The NSRI rescue craft conducted surface water search efforts in and beyond the surf zone.
NSRI shore crew and CoCT lifeguards searched the shoreline.
An aerial search was conducted by the EMS Metro Rescue Drone Unit.
Police divers (WPDS – Water Policing and Diving Services) attended at the scene where items, appearing to be personal items that may belong to the missing man, were taken into the possession of Police.
Despite the extensive air, sea and shoreline search there remains no signs of the missing man.
Police divers and Police Sea Bordeline Control will continue in ongoing search efforts.
Police are investigating.
