GOOD Statement by Sonia Bentley, GOOD Oudtshoorn Councillor:
In today’s council meeting, the Speaker of the Oudtshoorn Municipality gave Executive Mayor Johan Allers seven days to respond to serious allegations brought against him. As the GOOD Party, we call on the Freedom Front Plus, his political home, and the Government of Local Unity to ensure he fully complies with this directive and cooperates with the process.
According to media reports, the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU) has lodged several complaints against Mayor Allers. These include allegations of improper interference in municipal operations and personnel management, matters which go to the heart of lawful and ethical local governance.
Public office bearers must be held to the highest standard. If there is any merit to these allegations, Mayor Allers must step aside to allow a transparent and impartial investigation to proceed, free from political interference or perceived bias.
While Mayor Allers has publicly welcomed an investigation, the test of accountability is not just rhetoric, it is action. Given the municipality’s troubled governance history, including periods of being placed under administration, Oudtshoorn cannot afford another leadership scandal.
GOOD will continue to monitor the situation and stand in support of clean, accountable governance that places the interests of communities above politics.
GOOD Manifesto on Community Development: Involvement in various community development projects.
