Overseas online registration system launch remains delayed

27 November 2023 by Guest

Dear Editor

Despite indications from the IEC that the overseas online registration portal would go live over the weekend of 18/19 November, the system launch remains delayed.

This follows parliamentary questions this week from DA MP, Adrian Roos, in response to the ongoing registration challenges faced by South Africans abroad.

According to IEC officials in parliament, they are working to ready the system but face software and user interface challenges. They have once again indicated an imminent launch in the next few days. The DA Abroad will continue to work with our officials in Parliament and South Africa to push for the system to go live as soon as possible.

While online registration for overseas citizens has been delayed several times following an initial release date in early October 2023, it is now critical for all citizens to have a fair opportunity to vote in 2024.

The DA Abroad will communicate any further developments as they happen. We will also be launching a petition to lobby the IEC to provide more overseas voting stations, to remove the two ID document requirement and to launch the online registration portal immediately.

South Africans abroad are urged to make use of the online registration platform to register as soon as this is officially opened. With polling indicating just a 7% difference between support for the DA and ANC in the coming 2024 elections, every single vote can move the needle to bring the change that South Africa needs.

Regards

Ludre Stevens
DA Abroad Chairperson
