Statement by Luyolo Mphithi MP – DA Spokesperson on Human Settlements:
Across South Africa, criminals who profit from illegal land invasions and hijacked buildings, are coercing and exploiting vulnerable people to participate in their illegal actions. Once people, who are desperate for homes, are inside hijacked buildings or on invaded land, the criminals force them to “rent” or “buy” at extortionist rates to continue living there.
The DA’s Bill targets those who organise and profit from land invasions and building hijackings, while protecting homeless South Africans from criminalisation and safeguarding their dignity and rights.
South Africa’s housing crisis, driven by more than 30 years of past government failure, has left over 10 million people in need of affordable housing.
The DA is pushing practical solutions to expand housing supply and restore the rule of law.
South Africans are urged to support a fair and lawful approach by signing the petition: https://petitions.da.org.za/p/stoplandinvasions
