Pietermaritzburg’s R1-billion transport flop

No buses operate on Msunduzi Municipality’s failed public transport system

Msunduzi Municipality started receiving a national grant in 2011 to restructure its public transport system.
It took four years and spent R250-million to plan the project.
Another R950-million was spent to build the first phase of the project.
Five stages were supposed to follow, but underspending forced National Treasury to suspend the grant.
The project is now abandoned, and its dedicated bus lanes are blocked with cement barriers.
