Provincial Commissioner Hosts GBVF and Stock Theft Imbizo

18 October 2024 by Guest

POLOKWANE – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, led by Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Crime Detection Major General Samuel Manala, held an imbizo on Wednesday, 16 October 2024. Major General Manala representing The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe at this important event. Attendees include Nesengane Traditional Authorities Vho Thovhele Nesengane, Acting Executive Mayor of Vhembe Municipality Ms. Rose Mathuka, Provincial Head Civilian Secretariat Ms. Nhlane Mthimkhulu, various Traditional Authorities, Government and non-government organizations, and members of SAPS Management.

The imbizo focused on addressing the serious issues of stock theft and gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) within the community. It aimed to engage with residents and key stakeholders to discuss the challenges posed by these issues and collaboratively develop solutions to combat the devastating impacts they have on many lives. The event serves as a crucial step in the lead-up to the launch of the Safer Festive Season initiative.

The event began with a prayer. District Commissioner of Vhembe District, Major General ERS Van der Walt, rendered the purpose of the day. Different speakers presented on the topic GBVF and stock theft.

Deputy Chairperson of the Provincial Community Policing Forum urged the community to support eradicating GBV&F, noting that stock theft jeopardized the community livelihood. Residence were urged to become activists of gender-based violence in their homes.

Chairperson of Eyes of the Nation: Mr Kgopa delivered a message of support. He pleaded with the community to work with the police to combat the scourge of gender-based violence. Stock theft affects all of us, and let’s secure our property and report stock theft related issues.

Provicial Commander of Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit Colonel Danny Mamadisa outlined the purpose of the unit Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit and how it assists women and children affected by domestic abuse.

Provincial Head of Serious and Violent crimes Brigadier Venitia Masingi pleaded with the community to brand mark their livestock. Brand mark plays a crucial role; the livestock owner may identify the cattle using the brand mark, even if it is an old mark. SAPS have a method to verify old marks on the livestock. She further mentioned that the criminal took the livestock; they hid it in a safe spot and brand marked it with their own brand mark. When the owner reports stolen livestock, they lose the entire livestock because it is not branded.

Correctional Services ambassador (ex-convict) gave his testimony. He discouraged youth to refrain from behaviors that would lead them to prison.

The GBV and stock theft imbizo saw residences demanding service delivery from Vuwani SAPS, especially when reporting cases. They highlighted a lack of resources, such as motor vehicles.

During his speech, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Major General Manala highlighted the presence of the community as a powerful testament to shared commitment to confront the pressing issues of gender-based violence, femicide, and stock theft.

He further said the stories shared are a reminder of challenges we faced together. “You have broadly highlighted the fears that creep into our homes. The violence that destroys families apart and the theft that robbed the livelihood. Your guts in speaking up is the first step towards change, and I commend you for your honesty. The police will work timeously to ensure that every report is taken seriously and every detail is supported with follow-up. We won’t be working alone. We will need your cooperation. If anyone is known to do criminal activities, report that person. For those who are affected by gender based violence and stock theft, you are not alone. We are with you; request help from the station commander; if not satisfied, escalate to the District Commissioner until the Deputy Provincial Commissioner’s office. “Additionally, he urged members to continue sharing information on any criminal activities. “Let’s reach our department partners’ social development and department of health. We need your intervention to provide psychological support. Together, we can8 ensure no one has to face struggles alone, remarked General Manala.”

BoThovele Nesengani highlighted his dissatisfaction with the Vuwani SAPS and requested the Deputy Provincial Commissioner to rotate the older serving personnel, as they are no longer serving the community. He mentioned several instances wherein the incidents were reported but no arrests were made. Lastly he encouraged residents to brand mark their livestock.
