Pumas bag first win

23 June 2024 by Alan

The SWD Eagirls made their intensions clear that they want to finish the season top of the SA Rugby Women’s First Division with a very strong win over the Leopards, while the Valke and Pumas Women also scored significant wins away from home in the second round of competition played on Saturday.

The Eagirls outplayed the Leopards 31-14 and five try romp at Outeniqua Park made a real statement against a team that was expected to be very competitive in this match. To be fair, it was tight at the break, with SWD only 14-7 ahead, but in the second half their backs got going and the Potchefstroom visitors had no reply.

The Valke came away from Polokwane with a close win, but a win nevertheless. They totally outplayed the Limpopo Blue Bulls Women in the first half and scored four tries to race into a 22-10 lead at the break. The home side came back strongly in the second half, but Valke held on for a first win in the comptition.

The Pumas pulled away in the second half of their clash against Griffons in Welkom.

The home side played their first match of the tournament and scored two tries in the first half, but fell away in the second as the Pumas Women’s interplay became too much for their tiring defence.

The win was also a good morale booster for the Pumas team after their close defeat to Griquas last weekend. Griquas had a bye this week.
