Statement by Werner Horn – DA Deputy National Campaign Manager:

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is pleased with progress this Voter Registration Weekend. This was one step in a sustained campaign by the DA to correctly register hundreds of thousands of DA supporters, to ensure that every vote can be cast in the Local Government Election in November.

Any South African eligible to register to vote who missed this Voter Registration Weekend is urged to go online and complete an online voter registration.

The DA calls on supporters to visit check.da.org.za now, to check and update voter registration.

The DA looks forward to the IEC’s announcement of the outcomes of Registration activities, expected to be announced on Monday at 2pm.

While the voter registration weekend has come to an end, eligible voters can still register to vote online.

Any person who intends to vote in the November Election to take up their power to ensure that their town or city works, must be correctly registered to vote.

The urgency of voter registration cannot be overstated.

  1. Fun South African Fact: South African Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first heart transplant on 3 December 1967 at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The groundbreaking surgery was carried out on Louis Washkansky and Dr. Barnard was assisted by a large and exceptional team of surgeons, nurses and technicians. One of Dr. Barnard’s assistants was Hamilton Naki, a black laboratory assistant who had worked previously as a gardener and went on to work in the animal laboratory at the University of Cape Town. He had assisted Dr Barnard with research leading to the transplant. In the apartheid days, Naki had no access to higher education due to his race. Despite being unable to access formal training, he learned from and assisted university researchers and went on to do unbelievable work.
