Rejection of Health Compact is rejection of NHI

16 August 2024 by Guest

Dear Editor

The DA welcomes the refusal of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the South African Health Professionals Collaboration (SAHPC) to sign the second Presidential Health Compact.

This refusal by BUSA and the SAHPC – a national group of nine medical, dental, and allied healthcare practitioners’ associations representing more than 25 000 private and public healthcare workers – highlights the violation of the parliamentary public participation processes when it was used as a box-ticking exercise to push the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill through Parliament.

The original Health Compact, signed in 2019, was an agreement between government and various stakeholders, including health professionals, the business community, and labour unions to collaborate to improve South Africa’s health sector. The second Health Compact seems to take circumvent the good faith of the first by making the NHI Act – the very vehicle these stakeholders staunchly opposed – as the foundation of the agreement.

Like Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi’s roadshow, the new Health Compact seems to be nothing more than a ploy to coerce support for the NHI Act and silence opposition of a piece of legislation that will lead to the decimation of the health sectors.

Regards

Michele Clarke MP
DA Spokesperson on Health
