Runners and cyclists are gearing up for the epic first-ever Renishaw Solstice Race taking place at Crocworld Conservation Centre – part of the 1,300ha Renishaw Coastal Precinct in Scottburgh – on Saturday, 20 June 2026.
Hosted by the Scottburgh Cycling Club and sponsored by Renishaw Coastal Precinct, Halfway Toyota, and Gladiator, the event marks a major milestone for the region as the club’s first official race of this scale, with all spectators and participants enjoying free access to Crocworld facilities on the day.
“The KZN South Coast has always offered incredible natural assets for outdoor adventure, but we’re now seeing this translate into a growing reputation as a destination for organised sporting events,” says Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Coastal Precinct.
“With the ongoing development of our trail networks, the precinct is fast emerging as a key destination for trail runners and cyclists, with incredibly diverse terrain and coastal scenery, and a well-supported environment for recreational and competitive athletes.”
A Flagship Sporting Event for the KZN South Coast
The race forms part of the KwaZulu-Natal Mountain Biking Series and has been classified as a KZN Super Classic Race. According to Runé Van Zyl of the Scottburgh Cycling Club, the event is set to draw significant attention from across the province: “We’re expecting over 300 cyclists and around 150 trail runners, including elite and professional athletes.”
Since 2009, the Scottburgh Cycling Club has played a pivotal role in developing and maintaining trail networks across Scottburgh, Renishaw, and Umkomaas. Today, these trails extend over 100 kilometres, offering a diverse and immersive outdoor experience that showcases the region’s natural beauty.
“Our trails are built and maintained entirely by dedicated club members voluntarily,” says Van Zyl. “Given the fast-growing vegetation in our coastal climate, this requires constant upkeep such as clearing and repairs to ensure safety and improve the rider experience. The commitment from our members is truly remarkable, and events like this help us sustain and grow what we’ve built.”
Trail development is ongoing, with new routes being added. Sections of the network traverse farmland, including Finningley Farm, made possible through the ongoing support of local farmers.
Crocworld the Ultimate Race Venue
The selection of Crocworld Conservation Centre as the race venue was a natural fit. Its location provides direct access to trail systems spanning the Renishaw Coastal Precinct and Umkomaas. The recent launch of Badgers Cycling and Sports Centre at the entrance of Crocworld in March has further enhanced its appeal, with dedicated oversight of trail maintenance and route expansion.
“Through collaboration with Badger’s CSC, Crocworld has already hosted the third round of the KZN Provincial XCO Series, delivering an exceptional experience for professional riders,” notes Van Zyl. “We’re excited to build on that success with the Renishaw Solstice Race and showcase our region to the province and beyond. We hope to highlight what’s available to local athletes while introducing this KZN South Coast gem to visitors.”
Participants can expect a dynamic and varied course designed to test endurance and skill.
This includes:
- Predominantly flowing single-track routes
- Sections of farm roads for recovery and momentum
- Technical descents and challenging climbs
- The 45km route includes approximately 1,000 metres of elevation gain
“All of this unfolds against breathtaking coastal and inland scenery,” adds Van Zyl. “It’s a challenging course, but one that truly rewards runners and riders with incredible views.”
A Community-Centred Experience
Beyond the race itself, the event promises a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local non-profit organisation, reinforcing the club’s commitment to community upliftment.
Spectators and families can enjoy a range of activities and amenities, including:
- Access to Crocworld’s facilities and park areas
- Jikaleza tree-crossing adventure experience
- Jumping castle for children
- On-site dining and delicious meals at the Fish Eagle Restaurant
- Food stalls offering pancakes, doughnuts, and Boba tea
Van der Merwe concludes: “Events like this demonstrate the power of collaboration between community organisations and private development. It’s about creating opportunities, supporting local talent, and showcasing the unique lifestyle that makes the South Coast such a special place to live, work, and explore.”
