It is unacceptable that residents have to bear the brunt of the ongoing mismanagement and administrative decline at Lekwa Local Municipality (Morgenzon, Standerton).

Although residents personally submit meter readings to the Municipality to prevent being issued incorrect and exorbitant estimated bills, this still occurs.

The same goes for payments. The Municipality fails to properly reconcile its own bank statements and then forces residents to provide proof of payment instead. Despite providing proof, their power is often disconnected without prior notice while the account is under dispute.

Such practices amount to gross maladministration and the abuse of power.

Essential services are misused as an intimidation tool to conceal internal failures and mismanagement of revenue.

The Freedom Front Plus demands that all disconnected services – where payments have been made or are disputed – be restored immediately, that residents’ correct meter readings and payments be recorded and reflected on accounts, that the Municipality properly reconcile its bank statements and rectify erroneous accounts, and that officials be held accountable for incorrect billing and the unlawful disconnection of services.

The Freedom Front Plus will keep the pressure on until Lekwa fulfils its basic responsibilities and treats residents with the respect they deserve.

Service delivery is a legal obligation and accountability is non-negotiable.
