RIP Festus Mogae

8 May 2026 by Guest

Statement by Geordin Hill-Lewis – Leader of the Democratic Alliance:

The Democratic Alliance notes with sadness the passing of former President of Botswana, Festus Mogae, at the age of 86.

On behalf of the DA, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, the people of Botswana, and all who were touched by his life and leadership.

President Mogae was widely respected across Africa and the world as a principled leader.

Under his leadership, Botswana strengthened its reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies.

During his time in office, he distinguished himself among African leaders through his courageous and honest response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic at a time when denialism and political silence were widespread across the continent.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Botswana during this time of mourning.
