RS South Africa, a global omni-channel provider of industrial and electronic products and solutions, will be exhibiting at NAMPO Harvest Day 2023. The event, hosted by Grain SA from 16 to 19 May at Bothaville in the Free State, is regarded as the largest agricultural exhibition of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Erick Wessels, Sales Director for RS in South Africa, reveals that the company will highlight some of its Internet of Things (IoT) devices and solutions and food-safe products at NAMPO 2023.

“The use of smart connected devices is becoming the norm in a number of sectors thanks to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). By adopting technology and IoT, one of the many things that farmers can carry out is monitor their farms remotely and gain quicker access to vital environmental data to improve planning and increase yields,” says Wessels.

RS has several IoT devices and technology solutions to assist the agricultural industry on its journey towards 4IR. It supplies a range of single-board computers (SBCs), components, sensors, and programming modules that can be used in a turnkey solution for a smart farming set-up.

RS Pro Food Safe maintenance products for food processing and packaging will also be on display at NAMPO 2023. This range of food-safe lubricants and multi-purpose cleaners are independently certified by the NSF (National Sanitisation Foundation), an international public health and safety organisation, demonstrating risk reduction compliance.

The handling, preparation, processing, and packaging of food products requires machinery with moving parts that near into contact with foodstuffs. Keeping this equipment clean and lubricated involves the use of non-food chemical products. NSF certification ensures that such products present a significantly reduced risk to health and assist to effectively eliminate the risk of foodstuff contamination when used appropriately.

Wessels commented that the challenges facing the food and beverage industry are varied and complex. Failure to comply with national safety and quality standards can be time-consuming, expensive, and result in accidents or contamination. Demands for shorter production times places increasing pressure on the need for reliable, continuous operations. Extreme temperatures and corrosive environments mean that products must be able to withstand harsh conditions.

Technological advancements, changing consumer behaviour, and regulatory challenges are altering the landscape of the agriculture and food manufacturing industries. “RS is here to encourage navigate these opportunities and challenges, while helping to support operations running smoothly,” says Wessels. From sensors to personal protective equipment (PPE), food-safe cleaners, and even thermal imagers, RS offers specialist product solutions and components ideal for food and drink production.

RS will also display its comprehensive test and measurement instrumentation, ranging from gas detection to temperature and humidity monitoring for various agricultural applications. It will also feature its private label range known as RS Pro – a cost-effective, high-performance range of products including hand tools, which are especially useful for vehicles and other mechanical equipment used by the agricultural industry.

“NAMPO 2023 is an vital platform as it showcases the significant role of commercial agriculture in South Africa. It also provides an opportunity for RS to showcase our offering, and for the agricultural community to determine how they can best use technology and automation in their operations to become more efficient and effective,” concludes Wessels.
