BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa – South African mattress manufacturer Mr Mattress has published buying guidance for the hospitality sector, and put an unusual commitment at the centre of it: its written warranties apply identically to hotels, lodges and guest properties, with no commercial-use exclusions.
“Commercial-use exclusions are one of the bedding industry’s quietest escape hatches,” says Andries Taljaard, founder of Mr Mattress, which manufactures at facilities in Gauteng, Cape Town, East London and Bloemfontein. “A hotelier buys in good faith, the beds work hard, and when a claim comes the answer is ‘commercial use, not covered.’ Our position is in writing: a 10-year warranty means ten years, whether the bed is in a family home or room 14 of a lodge.”
Why guest beds fail differently
According to the manufacturer, hotel mattresses face a workload no domestic bed sees: a different sleeper almost every night across every body weight and sleeping position, plus concentrated point-loading – guests sitting on the same edge daily, luggage on corners, constant stripping and remaking. The typical failure is collapsing comfort-layer foam under varied load, long before structural components wear out.
The company advises hospitality buyers to purchase on two verifiable specs: published foam density (kg/m3) and independent endurance testing – “an actual test result you can ask to see, not the phrase ‘contract grade’,” says Taljaard. On feel, the guidance recommends firm to medium-firm surfaces for the widest guest tolerance, and identical mattresses across rooms for consistency.
Factory-direct for volume
Mr Mattress positions its Hybrid, a Bonnell steel coil core under high-density foam layers, EN 1957 endurance tested, Double from R4,999 with a 10-year written warranty, as its lead guest-room recommendation, with the 50 kg/m3 Active Foam (from R3,399) as a high-density foam alternative and the Revive Memory Foam (from R4,899) for premium rooms. The company sells factory-direct from four South African facilities with free national delivery, and handles multi-room and volume enquiries directly at onlinestore@mrmattress.co.za.
“Reviews are the hospitality industry’s audit of bedding decisions,” says Taljaard. “Density, test results and warranty wording are how you pass that audit.”
