8 August 2025 – South Africa came from a goal down to force a draw against a determined Algeria in a tightly contested CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) group match played at the Namboole Mandela National Stadium on Friday night.
Algeria opened the scoring when Abdennour Iheb Belhocini fired a shot from outside box to beat goalkeeper Samukelo Xulu in the 29th minute. The South Africans never dropped their heads and were rewarded when Thabiso Kutumela beat Algeria goalkeeper Zakaria Bouhalfaya to level matters on the stroke of halftime.
The two teams returned from the break in search of the winning goal but in the end, they had to settle for a share of the spoils to end the match at 1-1.
South Africa coach Molefi Ntseki said they expected the North Africans to be tough opponents and they lived up to the billing, especially after beating hosts and Group C rivals Uganda 3-0 in their opening match of the tournament on Monday.

“Over the years the Algerians have always had a football culture, and it has never changed whether they were under a foreign or a local coach. You see them always believing in their philosophy, their style of play and the culture of the country. When it comes to Algeria, we expected the type of football that we saw today,” Ntseki said.
The South Africa coach also congratulated Malibongwe Khoza, who walked away with the Man of the Match Award after delivering a stellar performance.
The South Africans return to action on Monday when they face Guinea at the same venue. Guinea were beaten 3-0 by Uganda in the other Group C match played on Friday night.
