SAPO plagued by rampant theft of SASSA funds

  • A secure, fraud-free system for disbursing SASSA grants must be established.

Once again, the South African Post Office, along with its employees, is embroiled in a wave of rampant theft involving SASSA money grants meant for the most vulnerable members of our society.

The recent arrest of two SAPO tellers in Butterworth for alleged fraud amounting to R4.1 million in SASSA funds raises concerns about the widespread nature of this theft within post offices across the country. While the apprehension of these individuals is commendable, it underscores the urgent need for preemptive measures to prevent such crimes from occurring in the first place.

This alarming trend is exacerbated by the closure of over 300 post offices in the past three years, leaving the remaining facilities mostly dilapidated, inaccessible, and dysfunctional. Consequently, SASSA recipients are burdened with the task of traveling long distances to collect their much-needed monthly allowances, spending a significant portion of their funds on transportation.

Now is the time to prioritise the establishment of a secure and fraud-free system for disbursing SASSA grants promptly. The current state of the Post Office, which remains partially liquidated with no clear path to recovery, necessitates swift action to alleviate the burden faced by SASSA beneficiaries.

Moreover, recent budget review presentations from the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies expose the ineffectiveness and dysfunctionality of this government body. The consistent mismanagement, looting, and theft raise serious questions about the extent of the suffering endured by the South African public due to sheer incompetence.

In light of these distressing circumstances, it is imperative for South Africans to ensure their voter registration to have the opportunity to rescue the country from the imminent failure brought about by the ANC government in the upcoming 2024 elections.
