25 August 2025 by Guest

Glen Preston, NSRI Shelly Beach coxswain, said: At 10h21, Saturday, 23 August, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew were alerted to reports of a local well known 57 year old male recovered from the surf zone by 2 local Good Samaritans and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) efforts were in progress – at Umtentweni Beach, KZN South Coast.

An NSRI Shelly Beach crewman, Med-Evac ambulance services, Mi7 ambulance services, the SA Police Services and Police K9 Search and Rescue WPDS (Water Policing and Diving Services) responded.

It was confirmed that 2 local Good Samaritan’s, one, a local male former lifeguard and commercial diver, and one, the son of a local commercial charter fishing operator, had recovered the local 57 year old man from the water after finding the man unresponsive in shallow surf from unknown causes.

The 2 Good Samaritans had initiated CPR on the man on the beach and they were joined in CPR efforts by paramedics.

Despite extensive CPR efforts after all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted by paramedics sadly the man was declared deceased.

The body of the man was taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.

Police have opened an Inquest docket.

Condolences are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased man.
