Glen Preston, NSRI Shelly Beach station commander, said: At 08h35, Sunday, 4 January, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from 2 men on sea-kayaks a half a nautical mile offshore between Oslo Beach and Shelly Beach – reporting one sea-kayak to be taking on water and the second sea-kayak assisting.
Our NSRI crew responded to our NSRI Shelly Beach station 20 rescue base where the NSRI rescue craft Freemasons Way was launched.
We rendezvoused with them 800 meters offshore 800 meters North of Shelly Beach where we found a man holding onto his friends sea-kayak while his own sea-kayak, heavy laden with water drifted nearby.
The casualty man was taken onboard our rescue craft and his sea-kayak was recovered onto our NSRI rescue craft and drained of water.
The friend paddled to shore safely.
We brought the casualty man and his craft safely to the beach without incident.
Once both adult men, from Port Shepstone, were recovered on the beach they arranged transport back to Umtentweni, where they had launched from earlier in the day.

It is wise to remember that firefighters fight fire with water before you fight fire with fire
